Guides for Window Screens and Solar Screens
Fiberglass has become the standard in window screen material over the last several decades. Fiberglass is affordable and flexible (it does not dent or crease like aluminum wire does). There is also a wide selection of fiberglass materials for a multitude of uses. See below for a complete listing of the types of fiberglass fabric available in the market today.
Standard Fiberglass Screen Material
This is the standard material used by window manufacturers on almost all new windows today. It is a 18x16 mesh, meaning that in one square inch of material, there are 18 threads by 16 threads.
Fiberglass screen material is available in two colors: Charcoal and Gray (Silver).
- Charcoal offers the best outward view.
- Gray matches traditional silver screens well.
Pool and Patio Fiberglass
Pool and Patio fiberglass is made from 18x14 mesh, versus standard fiberglass which is 18x16. Pool and Patio fiberglass is stronger than standard fiberglass. It also offers better air ventilation while still offering excellent bug protection making it idea for any type of screened in enclosure such porches, patios, gazebos and pools.
Pool and Patio fiberglass is available in two colors: Charcoal and Gray (Silver).
No-See-Um fiberglass is specially created to keep out the tiniest of insects (often called No-See-Ums). Made from a 20x20 mesh, the fibers are much closer together than in the 18x16 mesh of standard fiberglass. While the No-See-Um insects only inhabit specific areas in the United States, if you live in one of these areas, No-See-Um fiberglass screen will keep these insects out of home, patio and/or pool.
No-See-Um fiberglass is only available in Charcoal.
